Sabine Brünger-Weilandt has been President & CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure since 2003. FIZ Karlsruhe is one of the largest institutions of its kind in Germany, with the mission to provide scientists and enterprises with scientific and patent information.
Mrs Brünger-Weilandt has many years of experience in database and knowledge management. After completing her studies in history, German language and literature, education, and philosophy at the universities of Bonn and Tübingen, she worked for Deutsche Bank where she was involved in building electronic information systems already in the early 1980s. Other steps of her career included senior positions at Verlagsgruppe Handelsblatt, Greenpeace Germany, and the BBDO Group.
She holds various honorary positions. Particularly worth mentioning are her memberships in the Foundation Council of the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) and in the Advisory Council of the German National Library (DNB) as well as her function as a political advisor. She also advises the Executive Board of the Leibniz Association in matters of information infrastructure. As the chairwoman of the committee "The future of the information infrastructure" (Kommission "Zukunft der Informationsinfrastruktur – KII") and a member of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) she significantly contributed to establishing the latest recommendations for an information infrastructure in Germany. At present, she is an expert in the ad hoc workgroup "Information infrastructures" ("Informationsinfrastrukturen") of the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz des Bundes und der Länder – GWK).
