For more than 30 years, FIZ Karlsruhe, a Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, has been developing and marketing premium offers for promoting innovation and strengthening knowledge transfer in Germany and abroad.

Strategy and positioning

Our aim is to support the entire process of scientific value generation through an information infrastructure which integrates content, technology, and service. Our strategy is based on customer benefits, customer relationships, core competencies and international partnerships. Our long and medium term strategic policy is to focus on the following business fields

  • STN International (online databases and full-text delivery)
  • KnowEsis (e-Science solutions)
  • databases and information services (database production; scientific portals)

with priority given to STN and KnowEsis.
 
Our strategy is flexible and can be adapted to the requirements of new developments and challenges and the chances and risks they bring with them.

We conduct applied research on scientific data management, information mining, and information retrieval in close collaboration with academic institutions and research organizations. We use the results to develop our innovative products and services.

All products and services of FIZ Karlsruhe have to meet high quality standards. Quality criteria include topicality and correctness of the data; value-add through standardization and editing by human experts; reliability of the sources, and transparency of the searches. Quality management and quality assurance are continuous tasks of  the entire institution. Data security and confidentiality are also of vital importance.

FIZ Karlsruhe is one of the 86 member organizations of the Leibniz Association. The Leibniz institutes employ more than 16,000 persons, including more than 7,000 scientists. In 2009, their annual budged amounted to more than 1.3 billion Euros. The institutes handle strategic and subject-oriented issues of public interest and are therefore jointly sponsored by  the German Federal Government and the German Federal States.
