Meanwhile in Brazil: FIZ takes part in an international dialogue on intellectual property law

Karlsruhe, July 21, 2026 — In early July, our FIZ colleague Dr Pedro Henrique D. Batista, a research officer in the field of intellectual property rights, co-organised two high-profile international conferences in Brazil and played an active role in facilitating academic discussion on current challenges in the field of intellectual property law.

The event kicked off with the 44th Annual Congress of the International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP) at the University of São Paulo. More than 240 academics from around the world gathered there to discuss current developments in areas including artificial intelligence, data and innovation governance, and platform and digital economies. Dr Batista presented his research on the protection of trade dress and chaired a panel discussion on the tension between technological development and legal regulation.

This was immediately followed by the international symposium ‘Global Perspectives on Intellectual Property Law – Public Health, Fair Competition and Artificial Intelligence’ in Rio de Janeiro, which was organised in collaboration with the Judges’ Academy of the State of Rio de Janeiro (EMERJ). There, Dr Batista spoke on ‘Sham litigation in patent law’ and took part in discussions with international experts from academia, the judiciary and government ministries.

Through its participation in both events, FIZ Karlsruhe is making an active contribution to the international academic dialogue on the future of intellectual property law. Particularly in light of the rapid developments in the fields of artificial intelligence, innovation and digital technologies, cross-border exchange and the joint development of sustainable legal frameworks are more important than ever.
