Welcome to FIZ Karlsruhe

We are a leading international provider of scientific information and services. Our mission is to supply scientists and companies with professional research and patent information as well as to develop innovative information services. As a key player in the information infrastructure we pursue our own research program and also cooperate with leading universities and research associations.

We collect tremendous quantities of information from a wide range of sources, and we assure that this information can be accurately and reliably searched and analyzed at all times. We provide databases that contain around 1.5 billion documents. Our clients include international market leaders from the pharmaceutical and chemical industries as well as large patent offices and research institutes. In addition, we are engaged in the development of innovative e-science solutions and services, including systems for the confidential management of research data.

We are a non-profit corporation and the largest non-university institution for information infrastructure in Germany.

FIZ Karlsruhe is a member of the Leibniz Association, which comprises more than 80 institutions involved in research activities and/or the development of scientific infrastructure.

Featured Highlights

Version One of new STN platform is now available in beta

Version One of the new STN platform is now available in beta for fixed fee customers. This is the first major milestone in a multi-year initiative to create the next generation of STN, the choice of patent experts.
The focus of this first version has been on developing the core search and retrieval system for new STN. This release combines the complete CAS RegistrySM and Chemical Abstracts content along with Thomson Reuters’ Derwent World Patents Index® and powerful new search features to support preliminary searches in these key areas:

  • Chemistry and general technology research
  • Intellectual property, such as basic novelty and prior art
  • Due diligence
  • First pass freedom to operate.

A new approach for STN is to allow organization of work in projects for easy management of search queries and results. New technologies are designed to process broad and complex searches with industry-leading performance. The new workflow integrates the power of command line with an intuitive interaction that enables professionals to leverage their expertise and realize instantaneous results. For the first time, text and structures can be combined in a single query to simplify searching for chemical information. The STN Partners will incorporate additional content and functionality in the new architecture with ongoing versions. Full text patent content will be added throughout 2013. The current STN system, including STN Express® and the other STN products will continue to be available and fully supported throughout the development of the new platform.

Information infrastructure: German Council of Science and Humanities basically confirms overall concept of the KII

In spring 2011, the committee "The future of the information infrastructure" (Kommission Zukunft der Informationsinfrastruktur – KII), chaired by Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, President & CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe, submitted a framework concept for a scientific information infrastructure in Germany to the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz des Bundes und der Länder – GWK). At the end of 2009, the GWK had commissioned the Leibniz Association to prepare such a concept. Mrs. Brünger-Weiland, in her function as an advisor of the Executive Board of the Leibniz Association in matters of information infrastructure, had then been invited to lead the group of experts.
