FIZ Karlsruhe’s emerging eScience solutions, with the eSciDoc Infrastructure as one of the first available offerings, help universities, research institutes, and multi-disciplinary scientific organizations to address the many requirements in the important field of eScience. The numerous services that come with eSciDoc Infrastructure enable users to jump-start into this exciting domain. However, due to the complexity of the field and the manifold challenges, the software is not targeted at end-users. A compelling user experience demands careful design and implementation of applications on top of the infrastructure. Storage and performance requirements necessitate a thoughtful layout of the hardware infrastructure. Operating such an eScience environment is a challenging task.

eSciDoc Infrastructure

eScience means cooperation, collaboration, and communication throughout the whole process of knowledge generation. Typical scenarios include storing, manipulating, enriching, disseminating, and publishing not only the final results of the research process, but of all intermediate steps as well, such as pre-research documents, primary and experimental data, pre-prints, and learning materials. Resources and users are often geographically distributed. eSciDoc Infrastructure is a software solution for the development and deployment of such eScience scenarios.

The heart of every research infrastructure is probably the object store (or “repository”), which provides sustainable technologies to create, manage, publish, share, and preserve digital content. We have integrated Fedora, the Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture, as the central repository in the eSciDoc Infrastructure.
eSciDoc Infrastructure is implemented as a set of loosely coupled services (a so-called “service-oriented architecture”). It consists of a number of independent software modules that may be combined as needed. Services may be replaced with more adequate ones or extended by adding own or third-party-provided services. eSciDoc Infrastructure comes with services for object storage, search and indexing, statistics and reporting, persistent identification, workflows, validation, and transformation.
However, eSciDoc Infrastructure is not an out-of-the-box experience. As an infrastructure, it helps individuals and organizations build their own applications on top of the infrastructure. Therefore, it can be seen as an "enabling technology": Scholars and scientists can focus on domain-specific application logic when building new applications. eSciDoc Infrastructure provides them with an existing and proven implementation of common functionality, thus ensuring interoperability and compliance with important standards.
The source code for the eSciDoc Infrastructure is available for download. The software is released as open source under the Common Development and Distribution License. For your convenience, we offer compiled versions (Enterprise Archives) as well. Please see the Download page for further information.

Key features of eSciDoc Infrastructure include:

  • application-independent and standards-based software architecture (e.g., conformance with the OAIS reference model, OAI-PMH, METS, SRU/W)
