eSciDoc Project: MPS and FIZ Karlsruhe introduce their e-Science platform to the research community

15. May 2008

eSciDoc Days; June 9 and 10, 2008; Harnack Haus, Berlin The MPS and FIZ Karlsruhe focus their strategic tasks on the further development of the e-Science platform for web-based scientific work / Government-sponsored eSciDoc project introduced to the scientific community / eSciDoc Days to be held on June 9 and 10, 2008 in Berlin / among the guests are scientific organizations, libraries, and institutions who would like to use eSciDoc for establishing an e-Science infrastructure for research an publishing

Berlin / München / Karlsruhe, May 2008 –  At present, the new web-based working possibilities are changing scientific communication, collaboration and publication in a fundamental way. In the future, researchers from all over the world will be able to collaborate in all stages of knowledge retrieval. Typical scenarios include the storage, analysis, aggregation, enrichment, dissemination and publication of primary and experimental data up to the publication of the results. eSci doc provides the necessary tools as Open Source software (http://www.escidoc.org/). The Max Planck Society (MPS) and FIZ Karlsruhe will now introduce their joint, government-funded project to the scientific community. Institutions interested in using the results obtained so far and in further developing eSciDoc are invited to participate in the first eSciDoc Days to be held in Berlin on June 9 and 10, 2008.

On the first day, the MPS and FIZ Karlsruhe will meet with users and other partners of eSciDoc to discuss the steps required for establishing an open and active “eSciDoc Community“. On Tuesday, June 10, at 9.00 a.m.,  Prof. Kurt Mehlhorn, Vice President of the MPS, and Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, President & CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe, will open the general part  of the eSciDoc Days. Their speeches will address the strategic impact of eSciDoc and e-Science on their organizations and the positioning within the MPS and FIZ Karlsruhe. The MPS, FIZ Karlsruhe and pilot users will then present the platform and the solutions built on it.

On the occasion of the public introduction of the project, Prof. Kurt Mehldorn explains: "In all disciplines, research is to an ever increasing extent data-driven. We are convinced that an integrated e-Science network will develop within the next years. Such a network will interlink the intellectual and technical resources in science and lead to new ways of collaborative and interdisciplinary research.“ Sabine Brünger-Weilandt emphasizes the sustainability of the joint approach: “We will promote the wide-spread use of the eSciDoc platform by scientists in Germany and abroad beyond the term of the project itself. We will continue our efficient and trustful collaboration. We expressly invite other partners to participate in the further development of eSciDoc.“
A detailed program of the eSciDoc Days is available online. Admission is free, but because the number of places is limited, a binding registration is required
