SSL VPN - How to use

1. Configure STN Express with Discover! (see Figure 1)

Create a new setup, e.g with the Setup Name "STNK-secure", and the following settings in the Setup Definition dialog box:

  • Setup Name: STNK-secure
  • Host Name: STN-Karlsruhe
  • Connect via: SSL-VPN *
  • Logon Method: Standard (Winsock)
  • Host Name: localhost
  • Port: 6000

* Please note: Users of STN Express with Discover! lower than V8.01 select: Connect via: Winsock (Internet)

2. Establish a secure and encrypted communication with STN 

  • Make sure that STN Express is closed.
  • Open your web browser and call the URL more info https://sec-connect2.fiz-karlsruhe.de.
  • Confirm all security advices and security certificates. 
  • Confirm the web browser´s security certificate in order to install and execute the signed JAVA SecureApplet on your PC (see Figure 2).

  • Finally confirm the installation and execution of the JAVASecureApplet.
  • The STNK-secure Telecommunication Portal is opened in your browser window (see Figure 3).

  • Wait until the secure connection is established:
  • Separate small status window "Session Manager" reports status of connection
  • Green flashing signal confirms successful connection
  • DO NOT close this status window! Closing this window will disconnect/end your session and STN Express will not respond any more.
  • Launch STN Express with Discover!, click the "Logon" button from the main menu / toolbar and select the logon profile "STNK-secure".
  • Now your connection to STN using STN Express is secure and encrypted. The status window shows the status of the SSL VPN tunnel as well as the quantity of data sent / received through the secure connection (see Figure 4).
