Creating a search term command file

Available with STN Express, Version 8.4 and higher
Search term command files can save you time and effort by automating the process of creating a search script from a text file of search terms. You can then use the script as often as you like for efficient searching.

To create a search term command file:

1. Create a file (e.g., 17pn.tx) with your search terms (e.g., 17 patent numbers) using any common text editor program.
2. Select Query > Create Search Term Command File. You can do this offline or during an online session.

3. Specify the following information, and click OK to save the command file:

  • Location of the file containing your search terms (e.g., 17pn.txt)
  • Field code(s) (e.g., PN or TI,AB) for the field(s) in which you want your terms to be searched
  • Character(s) you used to separate search terms in your text file (Note: Carriage return is always treated as a separator.)
  • Insert quotation marks around each term to search as bound phrases, if you want terms to be searched as bound phrases
  • Name for the output command file (e.g., 17pnoutput)

Click OK to create a file with the appropriate commands and field codes appended to the supplied search terms.
