Embase Alert (EMBAL) Enhanced with Articles-in-Press Content and Optimized for Use as a Companion Database for Embase

30. April 2013

On April 28, 2013, the value of Embase Alert as a companion file for Embase on STN was increased by:

  • New Articles-in-Press (AIP) content (90,000 - 100,000 AIP records will be included in Embase Alert at any one time).
  • Inclusion of Emtree controlled indexing terms in the new CT
  • Controlled Terms) field in all Embase Alert records.
  • Addition of Article-in-press entry date information (ED.AIP).
  • Availability of the Emtree thesaurus within Embase Alert.

To ensure optimum multifile searching with Embase Alert, the following changes were also made to Embase:

  • Introduction of an IT (Index Terms) field that simultaneously searches both the CT (Controlled Terms) and ST (Supplementary Terms - usually author keywords) fields.
  • Inclusion of ED.AIP information for former Embase Alert AIP records.

Embase Alert complements Embase coverage on STN by offering access to the most recent eight weeks of published biomedical and pharma- cological information prior to completion of the full indexing process. Embase Alert indexing is algorithmically generated, while indexing for Embase is intellectually generated by subject experts.

Addition of AIP records augments the traditional coverage in Embase Alert. AIP records are based on citations supplied from the publisher for articles approved for publication. These records typically lack journal issue, volume and pagination information at this stage in the publication process. AIP records are identified by having AIP in the File Segment (/FS) field and Article-in-Press in the Document Type (/DT) field.

Addition of AIP content to Embal on STN provides access to the most current avaliable information to support prior art searching, pharmacoviglance and alerting. Search Embase Alert and Embase together, and in combination with other STN databases such as CAplus, MEDLINE, BIOSIS and SciSearch to maximize comprehensiveness. SDI packages including these databases provide convenient weekly or monthly updates with automatic results deduplication between the databases.
