A discussion of the effects of U.S. Patent Law changes on database design, content and search strategies will be presented. Also, new offering in another area of Intellectual Property, Trademarks, will be highlighted.

Citation search techniques can be very valuable in extending prior art searches, including a validity search, gathering competitive intelligence, and checking for possible patent infringement. Citation searching may also lead to irrelevant materials. Effective approaches in citation files such as SCISEARCH, Derwent Patents Citation Index (DPCI), and CAplus, among others, among others, will be discussed.
- Technology Assessment Using Patent Literature

In a continuing drive to present patent search results in a format most useful to the client, new features incorporated in STN Express 6.0 will be described. These enhancements include the capability for custom search reports, cover pages, etc., and will complement additional STN system features for analysis of search results.
- Tips for Running Current Awareness Searches in Patent Files

The current awareness search is a useful tool for the surveillance of specific research topics, competitors, inventors, patent status, etc. Considering the volume of published scientific literature, techniques are needed to identify the relevant information in a consistent and periodic manner and deliver this information in the most useful format. The business risks of not being current far outweigh the costs of maintaining that currency. Search techniques using the correct update code and assistant tools for setting up a profile will be demonstrated.
