Virtual exhibition on DDB is dedicated to Karlsruhe
The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) is the first national web portal for culture and science – together with the municipal archive and museum, a virtual special show about Karlsruhe is currently being prepared.
The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) was officially launched on March 31st, 2014. This web portal offers "culture and knowledge online" for everyone as it enables free access to millions of digital objects from different collections and inventories. The spectrum ranges from digitized records, paintings, sculptures, compositions and other audio documents to movies and notes. The material comes from libraries and museums as well as from archives, cinemathèques and other institutions. The DDB's objective is to make digital offers of all German cultural and research institutions that have significant inventories accessible in a gradual manner. At present, approximately 2,100 institutions are registered.
As the technical operator FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz-Institute of Information Infrastructure makes sure that the DDB functions technically and that the web portal is accessible. FIZ Karlsruhe is responsible for the whole technical and administrative side of the DDB and also ensures that the project is operating properly.
Since March 2014, the DDB also offers virtual exhibitions that can be accessed from a personal computer. Currently, the municipal archive of Karlsruhe, a partner of the DDB, and the municipal museum are planning the following event together with FIZ Karlsruhe: "From the letter of privilege to the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. A virtual exhibition as part of Karlsruhe's 300th birthday". As the title suggests, the exhibition is supposed to be online for the 300th birthday of Karlsruhe in 2015. Therefore, numerous photos, documents and other material digitized by the municipal archive will be arranged to a thematically related exhibition. For the first time, 3-D objects will be digitized for the DDB which will also be released at the exhibition.
