The newspaper portal is intended to make all holdings of digitized newspapers in German cultural and knowledge institutions accessible and usable. The focus is on holdings from libraries and other cultural institutions and on historical, i.e. rights-free, material. In the first project stage (2018 - 2021), the system was set up. In the second project stage, the portal will be further optimized.
The main goal is to increase acceptance and use through new and revised features such as individual corpus creation, article level display, and expansion to include additional formats and holdings. Thus, the newspaper portal expands the possibilities of (re)use and establishes itself as the central and user-friendly access to digitized historical newspapers from Germany. Other important aspects are (international) connectivity and sustainability. For example, the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) will be used and the portal will be connected to Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB), and maybe at a later time also to Europeana Newspapers.
