The project „NatHosting II“ (www.nathosting.de) ensures perpetual, reliable access to licensed digital publications within the framework of an overall strategy for Germany. The electronic resources acquired by the participating libraries are to remain accessible after the end of a subscription period as well as in case of a temporary breakdown of publisher’s servers or the withdrawal of a publisher from the market. In these cases NatHosting stands in for the publisher’s platform and allows for failure-free access to the licensed content.
To this end, a two-pronged hosting concept was developed during the first stage of the project (2014-2016):On the one hand, a nationwide consortium agreement with the hosting service Portico (www.portico.org) was to be concluded and has already been finalized. On the other hand, a Private LOCKSS Network (PLN), based on the LOCKSS-software (www.lockss.org) developed at Stanford University is to be established. Within this PLN, content not or only partially covered by Portico is archived. Now that the DFG has approved the renewal proposal, the implementation of this concept will start with the project NatHosting II (2018-2021), which aims at setting up the PLN with regard to both technology and content, and also at developing an organizational and financing structure in order to ensure a sustainable operation of the hosting solution.
