FIZ Special Corona: Pandemie – Understanding the Math

The spread of epidemics can be described by mathematical models. zbMATH, the information service for mathematical research developed by FIZ Karlsruhe, is a comprehensive source for identifying and analyzing relevant publications since the 18th century. In the following article, our colleagues from the zbMATH editorial office have taken a closer look at the topic. It became clear that mathematics has dealt intensively with epidemics and their spread at an early stage, as the example of the mathematician Daniel Bernoulli shows.
