National research date infrastructure for agrosystems research (FAIRagro)

In the face of huge agricultural challenges, FAIRagro focuses on agrosystems research. This is because rising demand is set against stagnating productivity, climate change, the loss of biodiversity and the weakening of natural resources. What is needed are new, interdisciplinary research approaches for sustainable solutions in agriculture. To this end, FAIRagro aims to provide researchers with FAIR and quality-assured management for publishing and accessing research data. Agrosystems research will use this to provide the basis for sustainable crop production in existing and future agroecosystems. To this end, the consortium will establish an interoperable and scalable research data infrastructure, link existing repositories, and thereby facilitate cross-cutting, systemic analyses.

The consortium

The FAIRagro consortium comprises 20 different institutions of agrosystems research in Germany (co-applicants), including FIZ Karlsruhe. The coordinating institute is the Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF). In addition, there are numerous institutions from the fields of agricultural and environmental research (participants).

Within the framework of FAIRagro, FIZ Karlsruhe’s the research area Intellectual Property Rights (IGR) primarily contributes its expertise in data protection law with regard to the scientific use of spatial data. To this end, a legal framework for spatial data is being developed, including issues of data ownership in a data exchange environment such as NFDI. In the context of agricultural research, for example, the focus is on the applicability and scope of the GDPR, anonymization, consent standards, and international data protection requirements.
