Legal uncertainties pose an obstacle for researchers, institutions, and infrastructure operators when it comes to publishing their own data or reusing other data in a legally compliant manner. FIZ Karlsruhe supports a wide range of domains in acquiring and expanding legal literacy with a diverse range of services within various NFDI consortia: from direct support in the form of helpdesk activities and informational meetings to training courses and workshops, to the provision of self-study materials and the preparation of expert opinions.

Direct support offers:

Based on the needs of the scientific community, best practices and information and training offerings are being developed on the topics of data science and artificial intelligence. The ELSA challenges that are increasingly arising in this context are being analyzed and prepared for the community. These include, for example, legal issues such as the legally permissible crawling of publicly available data sets, data transfer to the US, bias and how to minimize it, as well as broader ethical aspects such as gender balance and questions of diversity in and of data sets. Insights into the community and its challenges in relation to ELSA were gained through surveys and the analysis of interviews, among other things.
In addition, summer schools, hackathons, and science slams are held annually.
