FAIR and GDPR-compliant – FIZ Karlsruhe contributes to new factsheets

In July 2025 the NFDI Elsa Section published their new Data Protection Factsheets. The series deals with the question of how research data can be organized and made reusable according to the FAIR principles without violating data protection law or ethical standards.

FIZ Karlsruhe played a central role here: With Dr. Oliver Vettermann, Constantin Breß and Patrick Brunner, three colleagues from the Intellectual Property Rights research department were significantly involved in the drafting process. They helped to develop the content and ensured that the factsheets are not just theoretical, but offer concrete assistance for researchers in practice.

In this way, FIZ Karlsruhe is helping to ensure that data protection and the reusability of research data are not seen as opposites, but as belonging  together.

The series starts with three factsheets (currently in German only; an English version will be coming soon):

Einwilligung: FAIR und datenschutzkonform – Voraussetzungen für eine datenschutzkonforme Einwilligung und das Konzept des „Broad Consent“.

Methoden für den FAIREN und rechtssicheren Umgang mit personenbezogenen Daten

Data Linkage: FAIR und datenschutzkonform – Konzepte von Data Linkage und Record Linkage, ergänzt um aktuelle Fallbeispiele.
