Karlsruhe, July 7, 2026 — The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the revision of EU copyright legislation. The focus is on how the legal framework can be adapted to technological developments—particularly in the field of artificial intelligence—as well as to the needs of research and innovation.

Experts on copyright law from FIZ Karlsruhe also participated in the first round of consultations by submitting a statement. The statement focuses on the legally compliant use of artificial intelligence as a research tool and on strengthening the right to secondary publication in the interest of open science. In addition, FIZ Karlsruhe brings the needs of the scientific community into the process, identifies specific challenges, and formulates proposals for contextualizing the issue beyond the scope of copyright law.

The European Commission is continuing the ongoing review of EU copyright legislation through further rounds of consultation. Our colleagues in the IGR (Intellectual Property Law) unit will continue to play an active role and contribute to the dialogue.
