FIZ Karlsruhe visits the National Institute of Informatics, Japan

Karlsruhe, 14 October 2025 — During his visit to the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo, Japan, Prof. Wolfram Horstmann, President & CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe, engaged in in-depth discussions on current developments in scientific information and explored concrete cooperation scenarios between NII and FIZ Karlsruhe. NII, Japan’s only general academic research institution dedicated to advancing the discipline of informatics, hosted an extensive three-day program focusing on Research Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Scientometrics. The agenda included presentations of ongoing research projects and services at NII, as well as meetings with external organizations.

As part of the program, Wolfram Horstmann gave a presentation entitled “An institutional view on data curation and AI in knowledge infrastructures for research”, introducing FIZ Karlsruhe and its mission as a major non-university information infrastructure institution in Germany. FIZ Karlsruhe provides information services and digital infrastructures that support science and innovation. In his talk, Horstmann outlined the institute’s key activities, including its contributions to open science and data services, and explored current applications of artificial intelligence in research information systems. He also emphasized the national dimension of these developments, particularly through the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany, which exemplifies how FIZ Karlsruhe and its partners are building interconnected, AI-enabled data ecosystems to strengthen the research landscape.
