FIZ Karlsruhe welcomes further funding of NFDI consortia by the GWK

Karlsruhe, 07 July 2025 – On July 4, 2025, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) announced important funding decisions for the year 2026: All nine consortia of the first funding round of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) will continue to receive funding until the end of 2028. The federal and state governments are providing a total of around 92 million euros for this purpose.

FIZ Karlsruhe sees the decision as a great success and as confirmation of its long-standing commitment to the development of sustainable, interdisciplinary research data infrastructures.

With NFDI4Chem and NFDI4Culture, FIZ Karlsruhe is involved in two of the nine consortia of the first funding round, which will now receive further funding.

The institute is contributing its research-based expertise in three central fields of work to these consortia: in the management of research data, in the development and application of knowledge graphs and in legal issues relating to copyright, data protection and data licensing.

FIZ Karlsruhe pursues the goal of making a lasting contribution to scientific excellence as a transdisciplinary infrastructure partner. The continued funding underlines the strategic importance of this role within the NFDI. In addition to participating in discipline-specific topics, the institute is also involved in cross-sectional tasks - such as data integration based on ontologies, legal advice from the Legal Helpdesk and the conceptual development of NFDI structures.

FIZ Karlsruhe was already highlighted as a “hub of the NFDI” in the DFG Funding Atlas 2021. The current funding commitments strengthen this position and make it possible to consistently pursue the vision of a nationally coordinated, sustainable research data infrastructure.
