Orientation in AI legislation: How does the EU regulation affect us?

Our colleague Patrick Brunner from the IGR unit visited KIT on November 19, 2025. As he did last year, he gave an introduction to the European AI Regulation within the scope of the Data Literacy lecture series at the KIT FORUM. The audience consisted of students and other interested parties who wanted to gain a clear overview of what the EU is regulating with this AI Regulation and why.

AI technologies are already being used in many different ways in today's society and show enormous potential. At the same time, the opportunities offered by AI must not be viewed in isolation. Where AI encounters humans, risks and unanswered questions arise that cannot simply be ignored.

In his presentation, Patrick Brunner therefore addressed the risks of AI systems covered by the regulation and the question of how these risks are addressed normatively. He also explained the complicated intersections between AI regulation and data protection, which lead to uncertainties in practice.

This gave participants not only a good overview of EU rules, but also made them aware of the challenges our society faces as a result of the development and use of AI technologies.
