National research data infrastructure (NFDI)

The NFDI is intended to systematically make databases from science and research, which are often stored decentralized, project-based and temporarily, available to the German scientific system. The NFDI will be designed by users of research data and by infrastructure institutions that cooperate within and between consortia. The NFDI is supposed to set standards in data management and, as a digital, regionally distributed and networked knowledge repository, to sustainably secure and make use of research data.

Subject to the provision of funds by their legislative bodies, the Federal Government and the Federal States will provide up to 90 million euros per year from 2019 to 2028 for the development and promotion of the NFDI; of this amount, the Federal Government will provide 90 per cent and the Federal States will bear ten per cent of the costs. A total of three rounds of funding is planned. The NFDI directorate is located at Karlsruhe.

Research consortia in which FIZ Karlsruhe participates

In the first round of funding, the Federal Government and the Federal States decided in the Joint Science Conference (GWK) to support nine consortia within the NFDI. FIZ Karlsruhe as one of the applicants is contributing to two consortia that were successfully applied for, i.e., the Consortium for research data on material and immaterial cultural heritage (NFDI4Culture) and the Chemistry Consortium (NFDI4Chem).

After the second round of funding, FIZ Karlsruhe contributes to further three consortia: NFDI for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (NFDI4DataScience), NFDI-MatWerk (consortium for materials science and materials engineering), and the Mathematical Research Data Initiative MaRDI.

After the third and final funding round, FIZ Karlsruhe is participating in four more consortia: in NFDI4Memory for the humanities dealing with history, in FAIRagro (FAIRe data infrastructure for agrosystems research), in NFDIxCS for the entire bandwidth of computer science, and in NFDI4Objects on the material legacies of human history. Thus, FIZ Karlsruhe is now significantly involved in nine of the 27 NFDI consortia.

The NFDI4Culture consortium focuses on making very heterogeneous data from the entire field of culture and the related humanities retrievable and accessible across all disciplines and on continuously maintaining and preserving them in the long term.
